5 books about money and business that’ll help you get rich

Reading makes you realise that you know bugger all. But on the flip-side it also makes you want to learn everything that you can, especially on subjects that you’re passionate about.

For me, that subject has always been building a successful business and everything that comes with it. From making money, investing and finding motivation to marketing and sales and everything in between.

If you want to be rich (like most people do), your best bet is to learn from people who’ve already done it by reading their books. In 2019 I set a goal to read 52 of these books and these are the ones I took the most valuable lessons from.

Be Obsessed Or Be Average by Grant Cardone

Grant Cardone is a boss. This guy owns over 7,000 apartments in the United States and his capital firms hold billions of dollars worth of assets. His book Be Obsessed or be Average talks about how to be truly successful, you have to be laser focused on achieving what you want.

He makes the point that if we all redirected the energy we put towards social media, TV series and video games into our work, all of us would be successful.

Shoe Dog by Phil Knight

Shoe Dog is the story of Phil Knight’s epic struggle and incredible success.

Phil Knight borrowed $50 from his dad to start Nike way back in 1962. This biography tells the story of Nike’s early days, from making $8,000 a year to their eventual success with a revenue of over $30 billion.

It covers all the hard times and long hours that went into creating Nike and is a great reminder that even the biggest success stories struggled in the beginning.

Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki

Rich Dad Poor Dad says you can get rich without a university education.

Rich Dad Poor Dad teaches the value of being educated about the world around you. Above all, the book stresses the importance of owning things that put money in your pocket like  businesses, real estate investments, or stocks.

The point is if you plan to be rich, you need to make your money start working for you – rather than the other way around.

Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose by Tony Hsieh

Tony Hsieh details the story of how he built Zappos from nothing into an online clothing and shoe retailer with revenue over $1 billion. And he did it all in the pursuit of happiness.

His book lays out how he creates happiness for his customers and his employers at Zappos, and how that translates into success and happiness for him in life and work.

The Warren Buffet Way by Kenneth Fisher, Peter Lynch, and Robert G. Hagstrom

Warren Buffet is a money making god. His innovative investment strategies helped him turn $100 into almost $20 billion and created one of the most successful investment companies of all time – Berkshire Hathaway. The two key messages are to:

  • Forget about the stock market. Buy stocks based on the quality of the business.
  • Only buy businesses that will do well regardless of how the economy’s going.

The book spells out Warren’s stock investing strategy so that you can put your money to work for you and watch it grow.

In 2020, I’ll be reading 52 books again, but the problem is I’m starting to run out! If you’ve got any recommendations, do me a favour and pop them in the comments below or send me an email.
